American Kestrel (Falco sparverius)

Hephaestus

Hephaestus presented to the Project in June 2003 with cellulitis at the end of his left wing. Despite treatment, the inflammation did not resolve and it became apparent that the wing also suffered permanent nerve damage. The end of the wing was amputated and the Project received permission to keep Hephaestus as a permanent resident. In addition to his daily ration of mice, Hephaestus also receives an occasional grasshopper treat. Hephaestus’s current weight is 102g.
